Abstract:
The phenomena of atmospheric changes due to urbanisation are increasing in big cities worldwide, one of the most prominent of which is the appearance of urban heat islands. Remote sensing based on satellites and sensors sensitive to different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum has enabled new and easier ways of monitoring urban heat islands. This paper describes a procedure for determining the temperature of the Sarajevo area based on Landsat satellite images. In addition to measuring urban heat islands, more detailed analyses of the zones were carried out, profiles have been made through characteristic surfaces, and finally, comparisons with the air temperatures of the weather stations were done. The paper offers basic guidelines for calculating the phenomenon of urban heat islands and represents the basis for further studies of the urban heat island in the Sarajevo area.
